STEVEN VAN LUMMEL, NETHERLANDS (1981)

It’s hard to describe Steven van Lummel in just a few sentences, his creative practice spans so many disciplines that it almost becomes a world of its own. From founding Sweatshop, a skatepark in The Hague, to playing in bands, hosting festival stages, and presenting thought-provoking podcasts, Steven doesn’t just create art, he creates entire universes.

Through the founding of PIP Den Haag, he established a space where young creative talent can work, play, and even fail, an essential part of the process. Over the years, PIP has grown into a cultural force with global collaborations and a deep imprint on The Hague’s identity. It now includes two record labels, a book publishing agency, and an online TV channel.

Quote

"Steven's work feels like some sort of mysterious code to me. A secret language to help him navigate the complexity of life and that ties all of his worlds together."

Continued

He loves to tell stories as long as it’s far from reality or exactly the truth. With Justin Verkijk, he records a monthly podcast with long stories about fast music: Bakkie Bakkie. They also made a podcast series for artist Philip Akkerman in which they talk about his diary and death: De moord op Philip Akkerman. With Sef, he recorded a series for the Kunstmuseum: Zin in kunst.

The red threat between all of his entrepreneurial endeavors is the art he creates, painting keeps him grounded, it provides a safety net that he can always fall back on, even when times are challenging and hectic. The work he has been creating for the past couple of years feels like some sort of mysterious code. A secret language to help him navigate the complexity of life and that ties all of his worlds together. His work consists of a mix of colourful graphics, signs and small drawings, beautifully executed in various sorts of ink on Asian Triplex, framed in the most delicate handmade custom frames.

Van Lummel participated in numerous group shows and was an artist in residence in New York, Tokyo and Zaandam.
